Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector Review

Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector is a mobile phone game developed by Hit-Point and released in late 2014. A co-worker recently introduced me to the game and I have quickly fallen in love with Neko Atsume’s simple charm. While the game has a few other actions, the game’s official description is pretty spot on:

Playing Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector is as easy as one, two…and that’s it!
Step 1: Place playthings and snacks in your yard.
Step 2: Wait for cats to visit!

Once toys and food have been laid out for the cats, close the app and wait. Re-open the game in 20 or so minutes and cats will have been attracted to your garden. You then have the option to collect pictures of the cats in your Catbook:

Once a cat is done playing in your yard, they will leave a thank you gift – usually silver fish but sometimes gold fish (in-game currencies) which can be used to buy upgrades for your garden. I am saving for the Yard Expansion which will double the amount of usable space. There are also many different remodeling options once the yard has been expanded.

Currently there are over 40 different cats to collect and rarer cats require certain combinations of food/toys. Each cat also has one memento to share (“proof that we have become a cat’s friend”). So far it doesn’t seem like you get a reward for taking pictures of the cats, but it is another fun thing to collect.

There is a very extensive Neko Atsume Wiki that I recommend checking out if you have any questions about the game and a frequented Neko Atsume community on Reddit if you’re looking to connect with other players.

Available for free download on both iOS or Android devices.

MyIdol Huanshi Chinese iPhone App

I happened across this new app on a BuzzFeed article and couldn’t resist sharing MY idol. Check me out:

CocoFeed

I also created a video using the app, with my idol dancing to “Sexy Back” – check it out on Instagram – it’s absolutely hilarious.

You can download the app for free if you have an iPhone by searching for “MyIdol” or “Huanshi”. The BuzzFeed article has some helpful tips on using the app since it can be a little difficult to navigate at first (it’s fully in Chinese!).

Quirky Converge 4-port USB Charging Station in Black Aluminum Review

I happened across Quirky products through Amazon while searching for an outlet plug with USB ports. I immediately fell in love with their Converge 4-port USB charging station, but was scared off by the high price: $69-89 depending on the color. I, of course, liked the more expensive version: Black Aluminum. Our apartment’s kitchen has black and silver finishes so it would be perfect there!

I decided to Google reviews and found that Quirky was actually offering their Converge for 60% off with the coupon code CONVERGE. 60%? That’s practically free!

With the coupon, the price was dropped from $89 to only $36. And with tax, it was still under $40. AMAZING!

The Converge charging station arrived today and I am already in love with it. It cleans up our kitchen and looks beautiful at the same time. It really is a quality product and that shows even in the top notch packaging. I am so happy with my purchase.

Unfortunately, they do not seem to have the Aluminum (White and Black) versions in stock, but they still have plain Black, Green, Pink, Teal, and White for $69. The coupon still works as of now, but you need to spend at least $30 to get free shipping and with the coupon the item drops below that price. Luckily they have some pretty neat products that are in the $5 range!

I also really like the Pivot Power Surge Protector as well as the Space Bar Monitor Stand. Although, the latter is pretty expensive. I am on the lookout for an extreme coupon for the Space Bar next!

Plant Nanny by fourdesire

Plant Nanny combines health with fun to remind you to drink water regularly. The cute plant keeps you company every day by living in your phone. In order to keep it alive and help it grow, you must give it water at certain periods of time.

The latest iPhone app I am obsessed with is Plant Nanny. It is currently avaliable for FREE on the Apple App Store, Android Google Play, and Windows Phone.

I always thought I drank a lot of water, but I was way wrong. Plant Nanny configures how much water your body needs daily based on your weight and body activity (mine is 117 oz of water). Every time you drink a glass of water, you also water your plant.

features-grow-up

The first plant I grew was a Dandelion (above)!

Forget to drink water? No problem, Plant Nanny can send you periodic reminders (customizable).

I have found a lot of joy in watering my plants so that I keep them healthy and can watch them grow. Once you do grow a plant to maturation, the plant goes into your garden where it will gain seeds daily (the currency in the app) that can be used to purchase different plants or decoration.

I am reading Divergent by Veronica Roth on Audible

Yesterday I was watching various videos on youtube and through the rabbit hole was eventually led to this DIY video about creating an at home coffee and tea bar by Blair Fowler, who is best known as juicystar07 for her awesome make-up videos. Blair was also promoting her free audiobook download link from Audible (and specifically the book she was reading at the time – Divergent by Veronica Roth.

In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves… or it might destroy her.

I have never been a huge fan of audiobooks, but after being inspired by the Fowler girl’s amount of reading despite leading busy lives (in a different video, Elle Fowler mentioned that she reads multiple books at a time! HOLY CRAP!). After hearing this, I really wanted to get back into reading like I used to before college. The most recent series I read was The Hunger Games series last year, and before that only a few books here and there. Warm Bodies and World War Z are still sitting on my bookshelf unfinished. In high school I would read at least a book a week!

I followed the link listed in the video’s description (http://audible.com/blair) and proceeded to my one month free trial at Audible. A subscription is normally $14.95 a month, which seems a little steep to me for only one book, but I read somewhere that they offer another deal for 50% off the first three months.

After some browsing, I ended up purchasing Divergent because of Blair’s recommendation and because it is going to be released as a movie early next year! Once I downloaded the app on my iPhone, I was ready to listen.

At first I was skeptical. I have not had a lot of experience with audiobooks, and I was not sure that I would have the focus to give the book my full attention (I am a horrible multitasker). But after about an hour, I was completely acclimated into the world and able to visualize what was happening. I listened while I was at work and was mostly able to do both tasks and only had to rewind a few times. So far I am enjoying the experience.

Audible makes listening to audiobooks very simple. My favorite feature is the “rewind 30 seconds” function. I find myself using it constantly if I missed something or wanted to further analyze a section. You can also fast forward 30 seconds, bookmark a section, speed up the speaker, set a timer to stop reading (perfect for bedtime), move between chapters with one click, and probably more I haven’t needed or discovered yet.

Overall, audible is a great way to listen to and purchase your audiobooks. I suppose my only complaint is the monthly price tag.

*edit – Blair was actually promoting the book Requiem by Lauren Oliver in that video, but in this video that I watched next she mentioned Divergent.. my bad :D

Kanvess – Prints of your Instagram Photos

I ordered 6 prints from Kanvess.com, a site that will print your Instagram photos in cute little 3×3 inch squares, for my gift to Jake for our 6 month anniversary (I will post the pics when the custom frame from Etsy comes in). They cost a reasonable 25 cents each with $1.50 shipping (there is a 6 photo minimum).

From this transaction, I am very impressed with Kanvess. The site is sleek and easy to use, and the app is tremendously helpful. Once I decided on Kanvess, it only took a few minutes to have my order placed.

The prints shipped and arrived within a few days and the quality is fairly nice. I especially love that they offer the hard to find 3×3 size, although it would be nice if they offered more sizes, which is, in my opinion, their biggest downside.

All in all, I will definitely use Kanvess again when I need more Instagram prints! I see a cool Instagram collage in my future!

iOS 7 and the WordPress App!

Oh my goodness! A lot happened today… For starters, iOS 7 dropped today and it is so awesome!

My favorite features at the moment

  • Your favorites (under contacts) now have photos!
  • The photos app in general, especially the addition of a videos album!!!!
  • Folders can hold A LOT more apps
  • The look and feel in general
  • Siri, messages, etc. Apps all updated

What I don’t like is much shorter:

  • The charging icon is unnoticeable… I thought my charger broke
  • Emojis need a face lift
  • Still can’t fully control colors. I want my chat bubbles to be pink, already!!

I am still getting used to and discovering the new functions, but so far I am in love with the update! It looks so refreshed and sleek. I loved my old Windows KIN 2m phone for this exact reason… The operating system was very stylish! I thought iOS was already amazing until this update, now the old one looks bulky and dated!

So exciting…. If only they would let me control the color scheme…

Oh and I discovered the WordPress app today as well! Updating is so much easier that I believe I will actually be able to keep up with a blog now!
